The oldest living land animal on Earth is Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise.
At an incredible 192 years old, Jonathan has witnessed nearly two centuries of human history—empires rising and falling, new technologies shaping the world, and countless changes across the globe. Through it all, he remains strong, a living symbol of endurance and resilience.

Jonathan was born in 1832 and later brought to the remote island of Saint Helena in 1882, where he has lived ever since. Weighing about 200 pounds (90 kg), he may be massive in size, yet his movements are calm and unhurried—mirroring the long, steady journey of his remarkable life.
On Saint Helena, Jonathan has become a much-loved resident. Since 1991, he has shared his days with Frederik, another male tortoise. The two are inseparable companions, eating, resting, and even mating together—a true bond that has lasted decades.
At nearly two centuries old, Jonathan reminds us of a simple truth: life doesn’t need to be rushed. Slow and steady really can win the race.
